From lowland forests that beautify the plains and protect the extensive rivers, streams, mangroves, lakes and lagoons that give life to species of mammals, reptiles, birds and amphibians to coral communities that are part of the extensive aquatic ecosystem, are part of the habitats found in Piedras Blancas National Park.

One event that occurs in the PNPB is the spawning of the Needlefish (Tylosurus pacificus), an activity that takes place every full moon. High-energy beaches with steep slopes and little natural sediment renewal are suitable characteristics for the survival of the species.

From San José you can take any TRACOPA bus that goes to Golfito by the south coast or by the south interamerican highway and get off at km 37. From there you can take a cab to the La Gamba operation center.

From San José route to Caldera 27 José María Castro Madriz, turn off at Costanera sur, route 34 Pacífica Fernández Oreamuno or the Interamericana Sur that goes to Paso Canoas. Turn off at km 37 entrance to Gamba-Guaycara, approximately 30 minutes from the main road.

Animal Kingdom.

The park exhibits an important collection of native trees from the country and abroad, also an approximate population as of 2019 of 3552 animals (305 mammals, 104 birds, 755 reptiles, 39 amphibians, 1 arthropod and 2382 fish), of which 65% of them are in danger of extinction.[citation needed].

The park declares as its mission: To contribute to the conservation of wildlife through educational strategies that raise awareness of the need to maintain the balance between living beings.

By decree of Governor Luis Reyes Reyes, Decree No. 2,525, published in the Official Gazette of Lara State, No. 1,594, March 12, 2003, established the creation of the Integral Program for the Conservation of the Andean Bear in Lara State (PICOSO), whose main objective is to apply a plan oriented towards the conservation of this endangered species in the highlands of the state, considering the protection of its habitat through institutional and citizen action, coordinated by Bararida Park.

Characteristics of the animals

The largest Pelicosaurus (herbivore). The Pelicosaurus group (Oden Pelycosauria) is a group of mammal-like reptiles that were mostly carnivorous. They lived from the late Carboniferous to the late Permian and were some of the most important faunal animals worldwide. Although it is an artificial grouping of organisms, it includes animals that in their external morphology are similar to each other and are generally basal synapsids. However, the largest herbivorous member of the group was Cotylorhynchus hancocki, over 4 m long and weighing 500 kg, belonged to the suborder Caseasauria and lived from the Lower to Middle Permian (272.5 to 265 Ma) in what is now southern North America.1

The largest Pelicosaurus (carnivore). The largest carnivorous pelicosaur of all was Dimetrodon grandis from the Lower to Middle Permian of North America. It was up to 3.20 m long and weighed up to 250 kg. This reptile had a large fin or sail on its back that supposedly functioned as a thermoregulator and was composed of the elongated neural spines of the vertebrae. This pelicosaur was also the largest carnivore in its environment.1
