Biodiversity of Indonesia

The fauna of Indonesia is characterized by high levels of biodiversity and endemicity due to its distribution over a vast tropical archipelago.[1] Indonesia is divided into two ecological regions; western Indonesia which is more influenced by Asian fauna, and the east, which is more influenced by Australasian species.

The origin of the fauna in Indonesia[3] was determined by geographical and geological events on the Asian landmass and the Australasian (now Australia) landmass. The island of New Guinea is connected to the present continent of Australia, formerly as part of the supercontinent called Gondwana.

As a result, large species such as the tiger, elephant, rhinoceros, orangutan, and leopard exist in this region. Many of these species are now classified as endangered. The Makassar Strait, between Borneo and Sulawesi, and the Lombok Strait, between Bali and Lombok, are the deep water dividers of the Wallace Line, which marks the boundary of the Sundaland region.

Biodiversity contributes to many aspects of our well-being. It is a sustainable source that provides raw materials and contributes to human health. A healthy ecosystem ensures accessibility to nutrient and water cycles, soil formation and retention, resistance against invasive species, plant pollination, climate regulation. It can also significantly reduce the rate of pollution.

China is one of the megadiverse countries that lies between two major ecozones; the Palearctic and the Indomalayan. It has more than 34,000 species of plants and animals, making it the third most biodiverse country in the world. It is home to 551 species of mammals, 1,221 species of birds and 424 species of reptiles. It has 146,000 types of flora and more than 10,000 species of fungi.

This country has more plant species per square kilometer than any other country in South America. Ecuador has 18% of the total number of birds discovered in the world, 1,655 birds. The 382 species of mammals that exist in this country comprise 7% of the 5,490 species recorded in the world. It is, in short, a rich tropical region, with wetlands, due to its privileged geographical location in the Neotropics, which makes it part of this privileged list of biodiversity.
